Space Systems Engineering Intern

Description

The Katalyst Space team is driven by passion for space exploration and an unyielding desire to make a difference through our work. We are looking for students and recent grads to join our team for a Satellite Systems Engineering Internship this summer to help shape our collective future in space.

Our internship program offers the chance to dive right into an early stage satellite research and development program under the close mentorship of our industry-leading founders. Interns will be exposed to a blend of practical business drivers in the space market, the resulting design implications, and the latest in development techniques.

Paid 12-week internship in Flagstaff, AZ. 30-40 hours a week. Virtual option may be offered.

Responsibilities

  • System-wide architecture design, defining behaviors and interactions between complex subsystems
  • Develop and execute physics-based models in Matlab or Python to analyze relationship between trades
  • Research and conduct trade studies, developing an understanding of key and critical parameters
  • Support systems analysis with a cross-functional mindset to support system level architectural decisions
  • Research and understand changing satellite market landscape and opportunities for technology applicability

Qualifications

Required

  • Passionate about space
  • Strong software and model development skills, particularly in MATLAB/Simulink
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Highly organized and capable of planning and working across a variety of technical domains
  • Desire to work with others that share a passion making an impact, leadership, and spaceflight
  • Innovation-driven mindset
  • Familiarity with the space environment, commercial space operations, or robotics

Desired

  • Students who have obtained a junior or higher academic standing are preferred
  • Experience in systems engineering (requirement definition or architecture design)

Associate Space Systems Engineer

Description

The Katalyst Space team is driven by passion for space exploration and an unyielding desire to make a difference through our work. The Associate Space Systems Engineer is an R&D focused position, drawing from one or more technical areas of expertise to inform wide-ranging collaborative analysis across many different disciplines including those with business and market implications.

This position is open to recent graduates and designed for those with 1-5 years experience.

Located in Flagstaff, AZ with virtual option available through 2021.

Responsibilities

  • System-wide architecture design, defining behaviors and interactions between complex spacecraft subsystems
  • Perform trade studies of space system architectures
  • Develop requirements for electrical, power, ADC, and thermal subsystems of spacecraft
  • Identify gaps between requirements and top level objectives and creating solutions
  • Perform 1st order analysis of subsystem interactions to specify preliminary requirements
  • Conduct astrodynamics analysis of spacecraft operating within the Earth-Moon system
  • Augment and develop physics-based 3DOF & 6DOF models and simulations to test initial performance verification of requirements.
  • Lead small multi-discipline teams on spacecraft design, space mission design, and R&D projects
  • Innovate new product opportunities within company strategic plan
  • Aid proposal capture efforts (Private/Public – DoD, OGA, commercial partnerships, etc.)
  • Facilitate and rule on technical trades
  • Augment and develop stochastic 3DOF & 6DOF models and simulations to test initial performance verification of requirements.
  • Broad strategic thinking impact recommendations
  • Support pitch events and design review presentations.

Qualifications

Required

  • System-wide breadth drawing from technical depth in a related technical area (GNC, EE, propulsion, rocket design, SW, etc)
  • Strong interdisciplinary skills with comfort working across multiple domains
  • Desire to work with others that share a passion making an impact, leadership, and spaceflight
  • Innovation-driven mindset and track record
  • Proven leadership in and out of the Engineering domain
  • Strong analytical skills
  • US Citizen / US Person

Desired

  • Interest in startup company strategy and entrepreneurial mindset
  • Experience in satellite mission design and satellite operations, specifically for communication satellites (Launch System Experience is also acceptable)
  • Experience in Spacecraft Rendezvous Proximity Operations & Docking
  • Experience in Model Based Systems Engineering Methods
  • Experience in the full life-cycle development of production spacecraft
  • Experience in optical sensors or radar and processing of measurements
  • Experience in smallsat or CubeSat design
  • Experience creating and writing Deterministic and Monte-Carlo based simulations
